Dr Aruna Arujuna

Dr Aruna Arujuna is a Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist with over two decades of specialist experience in diagnosing and treating heart rhythm disorders. He holds fellowships from three of the world's leading cardiology bodies, sits on the international committee of the Heart Rhythm Society, and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at King's College London. His practice combines clinical precision, cutting-edge technology, and a personalised approach to patient care that is consistently reflected in his patient outcomes and reviews.

Every patient experiences an arrhythmia differently. The same diagnosis can mean very different things in terms of symptoms, impact on daily life, and the most appropriate course of treatment. Dr Arujuna's approach begins with listening - understanding the individual's experience, concerns, and goals - before building a management plan tailored to them.

He advocates the use of current, evidence-based technology alongside lifestyle and autonomic nervous system regulation, including diet, exercise, and mindful body practices, recognising that procedural and non-procedural approaches are often most effective when combined.

Dr Arujuna specialises in the full spectrum of cardiac electrophysiology and rhythm management, including:

  • Atrial Fibrillation (AF) - diagnosis, management and catheter ablation

  • Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) ablation

  • Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) ablation

  • Atrial Flutter ablation

  • Pacemaker implantation (including leadless pacemakers)

He is proficient with Abbott's EnSite Mapping System, Biosense Webster's CARTO, and Boston Scientific's Rhythmia Mapping platform, and is experienced with single-shot ablation devices, including pulsed field ablation (PFA) - the latest-generation ablation technology.

Training & Career Background

Dr Arujuna qualified from Bristol Medical School, where he was awarded Merits in the Molecular and Cellular Basis of Medicine and Cardiovascular Medicine. During his electives, he was accepted into the Vascular Biology Laboratory at the University of Washington under Professor Steve Schwartz, where he contributed to research on atherosclerotic plaque classification and fibrous cap thickness measurement.

Following graduation, he undertook training at the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust before gaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and moving to London to pursue a research post in Cardiac MRI and Electrophysiology.

His cardiology and electrophysiology training commenced at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust during his clinical research period and continued across the West Midlands. He subsequently undertook observerships in Leipzig and Lisbon, and visited the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to further develop his interest in the Autonomic Nervous System and arrhythmias.

Research & Innovation

Dr Arujuna joined King's College London as the Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences Division was being established - a formative period that shaped much of his clinical research focus. Working alongside MRI physicists, software architects, scientists and clinical electrophysiologists, he contributed to projects including:

  • Robotic Catheter Ablation - development and evaluation

  • Artificial Intelligence in CMR Analysis - AI-assisted decision support tools in cardiac MRI

  • Echo-Fluoro Overlay Hybrid Imaging - multimodal imaging integration for procedural guidance

This research period resulted in multiple abstract presentations and peer-reviewed manuscripts, and established a strong national and international professional network.

Dr Arujuna continues to apply this research background clinically, with a particular focus on image-guided ablation. The integration of multimodal imaging before and during procedures - including Intra-Cardiac Echo (ICE) where appropriate - is central to his approach to improving procedural accuracy and patient safety.
